FLOWER SHOW HISTORY

History of The Cincinnati Flower Show:

The Cincinnati Flower Show was founded in December 1989 by the Cincinnati Flower and Garden Show Society (now the Cincinnati Horticultural Society). The Society dedicates itself to promoting the environmental, aesthetic, and educational benefits for parks and green spaces, and to providing opportunities for the enjoyment and appreciation of nature and horticulture.

The Cincinnati Flower Show debuted in April 1990 with 200 local exhibits. Born as the brainchild of then Cincinnati Park Board Director Jack Wilson and Mary Margaret Rochford, President of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society (CHS), the three-day show brought 20,000 visitors, rave reviews, and a determination to improve and expand. Today the floral extravaganza spans five days and features international exhibitors and judges, a parade of notable guest speakers, garden-inspired shopping, the Artist’s Studio (exhibiting nature-inspired works by regional artists), and activities for gardeners of all ages and abilities.

Over the years CHS has presented the show at various locations in the greater Cincinnati area. For the first several years Ault Park in Eastern Cincinnati served as the show’s home, then at Coney Island and at Symmes Park.

In 2015 the Cincinnati Flower Show returned after a four year hiatus, to a new location in the heart of Cincinnati, Yeatman’s Cove, along the banks of the beautiful Ohio River. The Cincinnati Flower Show has the distinction of being the first and only North American show endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society, presenter of the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in England.
